METU GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

METU Graduate Program in History of Architecture offers graduate studies at M.A. and Ph.D. levels. The program provides training in different periods and geographical areas of architectural culture and built environment. Research interests and disciplinary backgrounds of the faculty cover various fields of history and theory of art and architecture. The METU History of Architecture is an interdisciplinary program affiliated with the Department of Architecture and is offered within the Institute of Social Sciences.

Vision

METU Architectural History Graduate Program aims to play a leading role in scientific and social development at both national and international levels in encouraging understanding, assessment and sustainability of architectural culture and built environment formed through the ages.

Mission

METU Architectural History Graduate Program’s mission is to engage in high quality, creative and innovative interdisciplinary scientific research and education in its field in international standards for the benefit of its students and the society.

Educational Objectives of the M.A. Program

Our Graduates;

1. Are preferred for teaching positions according to their fields of expertise at departments/programs of history of architecture, architecture, planning, design, visual arts, art history, cultural history, cultural heritage management, archaeology, conservation/restoration, museology and history.

2. Make a difference as researchers and educators in the field of architectural history by their competence in understanding the historical context and cultural effect of the built environment, and in analysing and interpreting intercultural interactions with unbiased interdisciplinary and critical approach.

3. Are employed as experts, consultants, organizers, researchers, curators, administrators, publishers, editors, etc. in work places such as architectural centres, research centres, cultural centres, urban planning centres, museums, professional chambers, art galleries, exhibition halls, libraries, archives, NGOs, architecture/restoration/urban design offices and public institutions (ministries, directories, commissions etc.).

4. Are employed in universities, governmental agencies, research centres, museums, art centres and media centres (publishing houses, magazines, newspapers, internet press) in works such as digital/non-digital data collection and archive design, organization of exhibitions, conferences and workshops, visual and verbal presentations, and preparation of publications and visual materials.

5. Translate, digitalise and catalogue archival and contemporary texts in the field of history of architecture and cultural/social fields with the advantage of their education in English and in at least one old language.

6. Are preferred in various other professional jobs due to their leadership, communication, writing and presentation skills; competences in research, information processing, analysing, evaluating and interpreting data; and assessing cultural differences.

Learning Outcomes of the M.A. Program

METU Graduate Program in History of Architecture aims to create the following learning outcomes in Master’s level.

KNOWLEDGE (Theoretical, Factual)

Our graduates;

1. Have up-to-date and advanced level of knowledge in the field of history of architecture, both in local and global dimensions.

2. Have in depth knowledge of research methods in history of architecture and literature in topics of interest.

3. Are aware of interdisciplinary relations between history of architecture and related fields.

SKILL (Cognitive, Applied)

Our graduates;

4. Collect and use information from different and reliable sources and from archival research.

5. Integrate knowledge gained from history of architecture with knowledge from other fields.

COMPETENCIES (Independence, Learning, Communication and Competencies Specific to the Field)

Our graduates;

6. Conduct and maintain independent research, study and training.

7. Have a critical approach to assess knowledge and skills obtained in the field of history of architecture and ability to govern learning.

8. Present history of architecture knowledge textually and verbally by using communication and presentation tools in an effective way (in Turkish and English).

9. Create history of architecture products such as publications, exhibitions, documentation projects, expert reports etc. by using knowledge gained in the field and in their topics of expertise (in Turkish and English).

10. Undertake new initiatives and responsible leadership with a critical approach to solve problems in the field of history of architecture and to improve social relations and norms.

11. Pay regard to social, cultural and scientific values and code of ethics in the collection, interpretation and application of data.

12. Keep track of up-to-date knowledge in the field and are open to lifelong learning.

13. By disseminating knowledge in history of architecture, contribute to the development and sustainability of knowledge-based society that has awareness of built-environment and preservation conscience.

Learning Outcomes of the Ph. D. Program

METU Graduate Program in History of Architecture aims to create the following learning outcomes in Doctorate level.

KNOWLEDGE (Theoretical, Factual)

Our graduates;

1.  Have up-to-date and advanced level of knowledge in the field of history of architecture, both in local and global dimensions.

2. Have comprehensive knowledge of research methods and paradigms in history of architecture and literature in topics of interest.

3. Have interdisciplinary approach to reach to original conclusions in synthesizing knowledge gained in history of architecture and related disciplines.

SKILL (Cognitive, Applied)

Our graduates;

4. Conceive and carry out original research with knowledge obtained from different and credible sources (archives, field studies, etc.) or develop a new idea or method with original knowledge gained in a new area.

5. Create interdisciplinary knowledge by integrating knowledge and thoughts gained in history of architecture and related fields.

COMPETENCIES (Independence, Learning, Communication and Competencies Specific to the field)

Our graduates;

6. Contribute to the field by developing a new idea or method or applying a known idea or method in research, work and training activities that are guided and carried out independently.

7. Convey knowledge of the field and their topics of interest textually and verbally in products such as presentations, publications, exhibitions, documentation projects, expert reports, etc. (in Turkish and English).

8. Develop new ideas and methods with the help of their critical approach and ability to govern learning in assessing knowledge and skills gained in the field of history of architecture.

9. Defend their original ideas and effectively communicate among specialists in the field (in Turkish and English).

10. Undertake new initiatives and responsible leadership with a critical approach to solve disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary problems and to improve social relations and norms. 

11. Pay regard to social, cultural and scientific values and code of ethics in the collection, interpretation and application of data; contribute to the improvement and conduct of values and principles in the field of history of architecture.
